Why does my baby keep waking at night?

If your baby needs help every time they wake, you are far from alone.

Parent education · Updated 8 October 2026

Frequent waking is tiring

If your baby needs help every time they wake, you are far from alone. The waking pattern makes more sense alongside naps, bedtime, feeding and how they fall asleep. There is no single cause we can identify from the number of wakes alone.

Look at the whole picture

Notice the last nap, the bedtime sequence and what happens during the first waking. If feeding or rocking is the final step to sleep, your baby may look for similar help later. Comforting your baby is not a mistake. The question is which changes feel right and manageable for you.

Choose a calm response

When your baby briefly stirs, listen and observe. If they need you, respond. Use a familiar voice, gentle touch or pick up to comfort, and feed when needed. Needed feeds should never be removed simply to follow a sleep plan.

Start with one change

Choose one repeatable part of bedtime or your response to work on, rather than a new experiment at every waking. For babies around four months and older, Katrina can help you consider responsive settling practice alongside the rest of the day. A free 15-minute call is a place to begin.

Coaching and healthcare have different roles

This guide offers general education, not a medical assessment. Talk to a qualified healthcare provider about health, growth, feeding, breathing or persistent distress. For an urgent concern, seek urgent medical help.
