Baby wakes shortly after bedtime: understanding false starts

When bedtime seems to start again

Your baby falls asleep and wakes shortly afterwards, sometimes within 30–60 minutes. This is often called a false start. The name describes what happened; it does not tell us the cause. A few ordinary evenings can give a clearer picture than one difficult night.

Look at the lead-up

Notice the last nap, how long your baby was awake and the bedtime routine. Also consider feeding, discomfort and recent changes. A late bedtime may be one possibility, but an early waking alone does not prove your baby is overtired.

Try one small adjustment

If naps were unusually short and your baby seems ready for sleep, an earlier bedtime may be worth discussing or trying. Keep the routine calm and familiar. Change one part at a time so you can notice how the evening feels, rather than chase a new formula each night.

Respond, then review

Offer comfort and meet feeding needs when your baby wakes. Keep the interaction quiet and return to your usual sleep routine when ready. If false starts keep happening, Katrina can look at the full day with you and help you choose a practical next step.

Coaching and healthcare have different roles

This guide offers general education, not a medical assessment. Talk to a qualified healthcare provider about health, growth, feeding, breathing or persistent distress. For an urgent concern, seek urgent medical help.
